Ashwagandha Root Extract
Withania somnifera
Taken for stress and sleep.
5% withanolides by HPLC · root only
What it’s
taken for.
And how good the evidence is.
| Taken for | Evidence | What the studies show |
|---|---|---|
| Stress | Moderate | Several small placebo-controlled trials of 8 to 12 weeks report lower perceived-stress scores and lower cortisol with root extract. |
| Sleep | Some | A smaller group of trials reports better sleep quality, mainly in people who were sleeping badly to begin with. |
| Strength and recovery | Early | A few small studies alongside resistance training. Interesting, not yet convincing. |
| Immunity | None | Widely claimed on labels. We found no human evidence worth quoting. |
Grades are our reading of published human trials on the ingredient, not tests of this product. Moderate: several controlled trials agree. Some: a few do. Early: small or preliminary. Traditional: long use, little trial data. None: nothing worth quoting. How we grade evidence
What the
research says.
Several small trials lasting 8 to 12 weeks report lower perceived stress and better sleep with root extract. Many studies have ingredient-industry funding, preparations vary, and long-term data is thin.

Who should check with a doctor first
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak with a doctor before use if you have a thyroid or liver condition, or take regular medication. Rare liver injury has been reported.
Three questions.
Worth asking.
About any Ashwagandha product. Ours included.
- 01Root, or root plus leaf?
Leaf is cheaper and raises the withanolide number on paper. Traditional use and most clinical trials are on the root. A label that only says "ashwagandha extract" has not answered the question.
- 02Withanolides measured by HPLC or by gravimetry?
The older gravimetric method weighs a crude fraction and usually reports a much higher figure than HPLC finds in the same powder. "5% withanolides" means little until you know the method.
- 03Heavy metals tested on this batch?
Roots take up what is in the soil. Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury belong on every batch report, as numbers.

Read the
fine print.
An independent report for each finished batch, with the lab, methods, measured values and limits. That’s our commitment.

How we testThe paperwork.
Without the small print.
Illustrative layout only. No test results or lab identity are represented here.

A little more
to go on.
Why specify the measurement method?
A percentage needs context. Methods can measure different groups of compounds, so the method should be read alongside the figure.
Where can I inspect a batch report?
Every batch comes with its own independent lab report, published on this site under the batch number printed on the bottle. The layout shown on this page is an example, not a result.
How many capsules are in the bottle?
60 vegetarian capsules. The amount listed on this page is per capsule, not a personalised daily-use recommendation.
